Preparing for an African hunting safari does not need to be complicated. At Induna Safaris, we recommend packing light, practical clothing and a few essential items to keep you comfortable throughout your hunt.
Because temperatures can change considerably during the day, especially in the Eastern Cape, it is always best to bring a variety of clothing that can be layered. Early mornings can be cold, particularly when leaving the lodge before sunrise, while by mid-morning the temperature has often warmed enough for short sleeves.
We recommend packing:
One of the most important things to remember when packing for the Eastern Cape is that the weather can vary throughout the day.
We often leave for the hunt early in the morning when the air is still crisp and cool. A warm jacket or fleece is ideal at this time, but as the sun rises the temperature usually becomes considerably warmer.
For this reason, layering works best. Lightweight, comfortable clothing in natural or neutral colours is ideal for walk-and-stalk hunting and allows you to easily remove a jacket or outer layer as the day warms up.
Comfort is far more important than bringing large amounts of specialised hunting clothing.
Sun Protection Is Essential
The South African sun can be strong, even on cooler days, so we strongly recommend bringing a good-quality, high-factor sunscreen, along with a hat or cap.
Sunglasses are also useful, particularly when glassing across open terrain during the brighter parts of the day.
Footwear
A comfortable pair of boots is one of the most important items you can bring.
Our hunts involve genuine walk-and-stalk hunting over varied Eastern Cape terrain, which may include open plains, rocky areas, hills and thicker bush. We recommend bringing footwear that is comfortable, supportive and already well worn in before your safari.
Avoid arriving with brand-new boots that have never been worn before.
Don’t Worry If You Forget Something
There is no need to stress if something is accidentally left at home.
South Africa has excellent shops, pharmacies and outdoor stores, and most everyday items are readily available locally. If you realise you have forgotten something after arriving, our team will be happy to help you find what you need.
The most important things to bring are your travel documents, any essential medication, comfortable clothing and footwear — and a sense of adventure.
Come prepared to experience early mornings, wide-open spaces, changing weather and unforgettable days in the African bush.
