Graaff Reinet is situated in the Karoo Heartland, and is mostly well known for the Valley of Desolation. It is a product of erosion and volcanic forces over thousands of years, which has created a sheer face that reaches 120m from the valley floor. It really is a very rewarding site; the vast stretch of space spreading out in various directions is breathtaking.

The town of Graaff Reinet is historical with many beautiful churches, and museums, with some awesome architecture. – www.graaffreinetmuseums.co.za

One of the famous museums is the Reinet house, which was built in the beautiful Cape Dutch Style. It boasts a huge rhino horn that is used as a door stop and that was used in this very house in the early 1900’s. It is also home to a famous porcupine house, a house that has been made out of only porcupine quills. It’s also well known for the doll collection.

Graaf Reinet has the Herbert Ruther art museum, where you can view some valuable contemporary South African art, in a building that used to be a Dutch Reformed Mission Church.
